Whitney: The Blue Boar

It was on a road trip to the Cotswolds with friends that we stopped off in the pretty town of Whitney, near Oxford for some lunch. Wandering around the town we spotted and liked the look of The Blue Boar with its cream painted exterior and fresh blue window frames so went in.

Inside is a very trendy looking bar area with informal seating. A friendly young lad asked if we would like a table and led us through to the back where the restaurant style seating is laid out. Taking our drinks order he left us all with menus whilst the eight of us chatted and decided what to eat.

The food choices range from Mediterranean inspired food to traditional pub classics as well as some modern British dishes. They serve food from breakfast through lunch to dinner and also do an afternoon tea.

It feels very up market with a high quality interior. Lots of honey hued wooden beams, open brick fireplaces alongside modern tables and stylish seating. The atmosphere is relaxing and informal with the feel of being somewhere exclusive. The loos are super swanky too! We all sat at a side round table with its curved bench seat and high back. It felt very cosy and private.

Having made up our minds on what to have for lunch, the lad was back to take our order and refill some drinks. The kitchen is an open plan theatre affair at the back of the dining area where you can watch your food being cooked. They have a unique charcoal fulled Josper grill giving an aromatic char grilled flavour to fresh meat and fish dishes. All meat is 100% British and is sourced through the three times winner of the 'Ethical Meat Supplier of The Year' Aubrey Allen.

A short while later after lots of wine and laughing from us, our food arrives presented on wooden boards with chips in a mini wire dish. I went for the Lime & Chilli Chicken in a toasted bap with chips. It was delicious, just the right portion size but rather pricey at £11.95.

The Verdict?
A great spot for a celebration meal in a plush pub with great atmosphere. It is pricey but this is a pricey area. The staff were super friendly and accommodating, the food all tasted very good and is all sourced ethically. They use good quality ingredients, the presentation is great and overall we had a very enjoyable lunch.
